We launched our NEP 5K competition shortly after lockdown was announced in Britain as a means to keep the motivation up throughout the running community. As much for ourselves as you! The competition followed a relaxed format with runners able to race as many 5k's in the month of April as they wish and simply register their performances in our strava group with #NEP5K. A total of 79 athlete's competed in our challenge spread across 27 clubs from Yorkshire up to Alnwick in Northumberland. All donations throughout the challenge were donated to the MIND mental health charity to support their services at this challenging time.
Jess Young of Swaledale Runners set the early pace in the league table with a sub 20 clocking, where she remained for some time. However her teammate Martha McBarron swooped in with a huge performance and snatched the lead in the 2nd week. By the 3rd week the competition really did start to heat up. Garry Reay of Jarrow & Hebburn entered and set a new standard of an 85.7% age-graded score which is well into the category of national class. It was thought that Garry's huge performance couldn't be challenged but Heather Robinson of Jarrow gave it a good go and came within an 0.82% age-graded score of knocking Garry off his perch. Needless to say, Garry held onto top spot and is our NEP 5K Winner! Completing the top 3 was Linda Noble of Darlington Harriers who produced a huge PB mid-way through the challenge and held off a large pack gunning for a spot in the prizes. A special mention must go out to everyone who put their heart and sole into the challenge and gave it their absolute all! Well done.
1st place - Garry Reay (Jarrow & Hebburn) - 85.70% and 15:09 age-graded time.
2nd place - Heather Robinson (Jarrow & Hebburn) - 84.89% and 17:24 age-graded time.
3rd place - Linda Noble (Darlington Harriers) - 82.85% and and 17:49 age-graded time.
